We know that life does not stand still. It marches forward day after day after day. We, the people of God, are called to move forward on this life journey with Christ and in Christ. We are called also to move forward with each other, as one body of Christ in the world.
This year King’s House Quiet Retreat explores the two disciples’ journey to Emmaus. The retreat opens Friday evening as we consider the disciples’ painful disappointment when the person that they had so hoped would redeem Israel suffered a violent death. We are invited to reflect on times in our own lives when we have been disappointed, when we hoped for something that was not to be, times when we, too, have been Heartbroken.
We consider how gathering here at the King’s House, with others on this same journey of life, offers us an opportunity to share our burdens in the quiet of prayer, where Jesus Draws Near. Saturday morning’s conference invites us to notice how Jesus has been with us in our disappointments and confusion, though we, like the disciples, may not have recognized him. We ask ourselves how open are we to seeing Jesus in a new way? What keeps us from seeing Jesus present in all the experiences of our daily lives?
Saturday afternoon’s conference invites us to see the connection that occurs when we are vulnerable. It is then that we become Bread for the Journey, blessed, broken, and shared with others. We ask ourselves: how have we been bread for someone else? How have others been bread for us? We reflect on how we have encountered Christ in the breaking of the bread, and how we have offered hospitality to others even in our own suffering. Saturday evening offers us an opportunity to recognize those times we have failed to share our bread with others, and to reconnect with Christ and each other in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Sunday’s conference concludes our retreat and reminds us that The Journey Continues. We notice how our hearts are burning within us as we have spent time with Christ in word and sacrament. Having encountered Christ and allowing ourselves to be transformed by him, we leave empowered and filled with grace, compelled to share our story with others.
These four conferences are offered over the course of our time together. As always, our Quiet Retreats offer Eucharist, the Sacrament of Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick. There is time for quiet prayer, prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, and walking the beautiful grounds of the Shrine.
We hope that through these experiences, you come to encounter Christ on your own journey, and that your heart, like the disciples’ hearts, burns within you as you leave.
Come journey with us on this last Team-preached Quiet Retreat at King’s House at the Shrine, as we give thanks for What Has Been, and journey on with the Lord into What Will Be.
